Book Bingo Night
B-I-N-G-O is a very popular pastime, and you can host your own bingo night to help raise funds for your People to People journey. The twist on this bingo game is that the prizes are books donated by local people and businesses.
What You Will Need
Check around at local book stores and ask for donations of books, new and used. You may also go from door to door, accompanied by an adult, and ask for donations of any books that are in good condition. Once you have accumulated enough books, distribute event flyers around town advertising a book bingo night.
Ask permission to hold the bingo event at a school, church, or other event location with a large enough area for seating and tables. Make sure the location has enough tables and chairs, otherwise borrow some from other locations.
Ask local retirement homes, senior centers, or other bingo facilities if you can borrow bingo cards, chips or daubers, balls, and the cage. Charge people 3-5 dollars for each bingo card. Ask a volunteer to be in charge of announcing numbers. Set up several tables behind the announcer, and lay the books out on top of them. You could separate the books into categories, such as children’s, cookbooks, non-fiction, etc., to make it easier for people to pick the book that suits them.
When someone gets a bingo, he or she gets to pick any book he or she wants. If, after the event, you have leftover books, you can arrange another bingo night or donate the books to charity.
Volunteers
Ask friends and family to help by donating and collecting books, setting up for the event, and announcing numbers. Ask other delegation members to help out as well. Get to know each other while raising money!
Location
Set up the bingo event in a large, open room that has enough space for tables and chairs. Ask for permission from a school or church to use a cafeteria or gymnasium.
Event Flyers
Make flyers advertising the book bingo night, when and where the event is taking place, how much it costs to participate, and why you are raising the money. Post them around town in retail or grocery stores, churches, schools, activity centers, or anywhere else you can think of, but make sure you have permission first. You can ask a local newspaper or newsletter to advertise the event weeks in advance.
People to People Flyers
Download a copy of your
program flyer and make copies to distribute at your event.
