Fund-Raising Spotlight

Hand-Painted Terra Cotta Flower Pots

Show off your design and creative skills with this fun activity. The best gifts are often homemade; you can offer these plants over the holidays to help raise tuition for your People to People journey.

What You Will Need

  • Terra cotta pots

  • Acrylic paints

  • Clear, waterproof lacquer

  • Paintbrushes, stamps, stencils, etc.

  • Volunteers

  • Location

  • People to People Flyers

Using acrylic paints, decorate terra cotta flower pots and sell them at local garden stores or florist shops. Look for wholesale terra cotta pots at garden and craft stores. It is a good idea to do several layers of acrylic paint and then coat it with a clear lacquer finish to seal and protect it. Avoid painting the bottom of the flower pot, inside and outside, so that any excess water can seep through freely. Be creative with your designs—you can decorate them in the style of the countries you are exploring on your journey, or if you are selling the pots during a particular holiday, you can paint them in that theme.

Location
When painting your flower pots, choose a location where it would be alright if you spill a little paint, such as outdoors or in a garage, or cover the area with plastic sheets to prevent messes. Ask permission at local florist, garden, craft, or grocery stores to sell your hand-painted pottery.

Volunteers
Ask friends and family to lend a hand with decorating the flower pots.  Make it a group project and ask other delegation members to help.  Get to know each other while you raise money!

People to People Flyers
Download a copy of your program flyer and make copies to distribute at your event.
